Great ! In this article we guide you step by step through the correct installation and first start-up, with helpful tips to avoid common mistakes.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/crea.hobbyland.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/female-potter-put-it-into-a-kiln-for-firing-kiln-2025-02-21-02-26-52-utc.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9761\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>First of all: where to install it?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>The location of the oven is <strong>critical<\/strong>. Here are the basic rules to follow: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Leave <strong>at least 50 cm away<\/strong> from any walls and flammable objects.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Avoid outdoor installation, <\/strong>even if covered: these are the directions that furnace manufacturers always specify in their installation manuals. Moisture, even minimal, can damage components. <br\/>If indoor installation is not possible, consider buying an oven equipped with wheels so you can move it outdoors <strong>only during cooking<\/strong> (always out of the weather) or carefully analyze the location and the protection you can add to keep it as sheltered as possible. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Always work in a <strong>well-ventilated room<\/strong> with a window nearby.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you use materials that develop strong odors (such as lustres and metal enamels), <strong>better equip yourself with a fume extraction pipe<\/strong>: it is not mandatory, but strongly recommended.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>First start-up: an essential step<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Whether it&#8217;s <strong>fiber<\/strong> or <strong>refractory brick<\/strong>, every new kiln needs an initial <strong>firing cycle<\/strong> with the kiln empty.<br\/><br\/><strong>Here&#8217;s how:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Set a slow ramp cycle, with a final temperature of <strong>900-1000\u00b0C<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The total duration (between heating and cooling) will be about <strong>24 hours.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Never open the kiln during the cycle<\/strong>, especially in the case of fiber ones: they may emit <strong>smoke<\/strong> when first used, and this is completely normal. Don&#8217;t open the kiln before the cycle end, you may notice that the fiber becomes blackened, don&#8217;t panic. Completing the cycle will restore the original appearence. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In <strong>brick kilns<\/strong>, you can put in <strong>shelves and columns<\/strong> right away during the initial start-up.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In <strong>fiber ovens<\/strong>, it is best to run <strong>two separate cycles<\/strong>: one with the kiln empty, and the second one ewith the internal accessories.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>It is appropriate to <strong>dwell briefly<\/strong> on the start-up of ceramic fiber-coated furnaces. Indeed, in addition to the emission of smoke, a particularly intense odor is emitted, which can be bothersome and irritating to the eyes. And as you can imagine this causes particular concern.  <br\/><br\/>If this first firing is done in an enclosed space, the odor may linger for several days. It is therefore preferable to carry out the operation in a <strong>well-ventilated space<\/strong>, although our most effective advice is to perform the first firing <strong>outdoors<\/strong>. It should be emphasized that this phenomenon occurs <strong>only at the first firing<\/strong>: in subsequent firings, neither smoke nor unpleasant odors will be present.   <br\/><br\/>In contrast, this problem is not encountered in ovens with refractory brick interiors.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Oven on wheels or fixed?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2592\" height=\"1728\" src=\"https:\/\/crea.hobbyland.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/potter-in-workshop-opening-kiln-2025-04-03-21-31-32-utc.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9766\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Some pit ovens, such as Nabertherm models, have <strong>casters<\/strong>, so you can move them easily for cleaning or maintenance. <strong>Front-loading<\/strong> ovens, on the other hand, once installed, tend to <strong>stay fixed<\/strong> forever: choose the location well before plugging them in. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Power outlet and consumption<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Before purchasing your kiln, request a technical <strong>data sheet for the product.<\/strong> This document is essential for you to check with your electrician to see if the room&#8217;s electrical system is adequate to support the<strong>power draw required<\/strong> by the oven. If not, technical adjustments may be necessary to ensure safe and efficient use.  <br\/><br\/>\u26a0\ufe0f <strong>Important:<\/strong> The kiln&#8217;s power outlet should never be connected via power strips or adapters.<br\/><br\/>Electric ovens require high power, and power strips are not designed to withstand such intense loads. Improper use can cause <strong>overheating<\/strong> and <strong>melting of components<\/strong>, resulting in safety hazards. <\/p>\n\n<p>It is essential that the furnace be connected to <strong>a dedicated outlet<\/strong>, made or verified by a <strong>qualified electrician<\/strong>, who will properly size the cables and components to ensure maximum safety and compliance with current regulations.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Maintenance<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Ovens are<strong> simple and reliable<\/strong> machines that do not require constant maintenance. However, paying attention to a few tricks will allow you to avoid interruptions in your work process and unexpected replacements of components subject to wear and tear. <br\/><br\/>Here are some best practices to follow:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Monthly cleaning of the cooking chamber:<\/strong> use a vacuum cleaner to remove accumulated dust and debris. Regular cleaning helps maintain the efficiency of the oven. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Visual inspection of the thermocouple:<\/strong> periodically check for changes from its original appearance. A change may indicate an impending malfunction&#8230;  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Be ready with replacement heating elements:<\/strong> over time, heating elements tend to wear out, affecting the oven&#8217;s ability to reach the set temperature.
